Description

The Automobiles Talbot-Lago were built in Suresnes between 1935 and 1960, the company having been formed by the acquisition in 1934 of Talbot by the Italian engineer and entrepreneur Anthony Lago. Despite the occupation, Antony Lago and his new chief engineer, Carlo Marchetti are developing a completely new 4.5-litre inline 6-cylinder engine with two side camshafts called «Lago 2ac». The first prototypes and tests were carried out in early 1942. The tests were successful, the project progressed well and, from the first months after the end of the war, Talbot Lago was able to bring out a new vehicle. The Talbot Lago Record T26 (the figure 26 indicating the tax power of 26 hp) 4.5 liters. Its 4,482 cc 3 engine develops 170 hp at 4,200 t/min allowing a maximum speed of 170 km/h. Most of the luxurious Record are manufactured entirely by the firm itself, chassis and bodywork. However, some rolling frames will be delivered to renowned coachbuilders. Between its first presentation in 1946 and the end of its production in 1951, only 36 models were manufactured, none resembling another. A very modest success. And yet Talbot Lago is the only major French manufacturer to release a completely new vehicle in this difficult post-war period. Its most direct French competitors, Bugatti, Delage and Delahaye, will only be able to produce their pre-war models that are more or less up to date. The T26 GS will see some of its chassis «diverted» to competition under the name of T26C. It is one of these models that will allow Talbot Lago to win the most beautiful of his race victories in the «24 Hours of Le Mans» of 1950. Jacques Saoutchik, a Jewish cabinetmaker of Russian origin, born in Minsk in 1880, opens a body shop in Neuilly, on the outskirts of Paris. We are in 1906 and his first creation is made on Isotta-Fraschini chassis. Since 1920, Saoutchik has risen to the level of the best coachbuilders in Europe, and among its customers is an impressive number of stars of the big screen including Mary Pickford for which he designed a special Delage, but also of crowned heads, the kings of Cambodia, of Siam, Egypt and Norway, the emperor of Ethiopia and the shah of Iran. For several years, the remarkable «transformables», cabriolets, coupes and city cars signed Jacques Saoutchik, represent the pinnacle of chic and reap a harvest of trophies at the elegance competitions held in Paris and in the popular resorts of the Atlantic Coast and the Côte d'Azur. Like Figoni and Falaschi, his Parisian contemporaries, Saoutchik survived the Great Depression; however, the post-World War II period dealt a fatal blow to him, as well as to most automobile designers. In fact, of the 57 coachbuilders present at the London Motor Show in 1929, there were only 13 in 1959. The golden age of luxury automobiles was coming to an end. This 3D model is another example of Saoutchik’s extravagant style with this T26 Grand Sport with long wheelbase (2800 mm). This unique model will be praised by all automotive style specialists at the time of its release. This car is still considered today as one of the most fanciful cars of that time. The chassis is a long wheelbase chassis equipped with the aluminum alloy six-cylinder in-line engine located longitudinally on the front. With a displacement of 4,482 cc it is powered by 3 Zenith-Stromberg carburettors. It thus develops a maximum power of 195 hp at 4,500 t/min. This mechanical performance allows it to reach a maximum speed of around 200 km/h.
