Description

Almost done with the renders I did for my Audubon Sale/TEE v4 release... The Lesser White-front Goose breeds in the northernmost Palearctic, but it is a scarce breeder in Europe, with a reintroduction attempt in Fennoscandia to improve its numbers. It feeds on submerged and emergent aquatic vegetation as well as insects and fish spawn. There are 16,000-27,000 mature individuals with a decreasing population trend. This species is listed as Vulnerable because it has suffered a rapid population reduction in its key breeding populations in Russia, and equivalent declines are predicted to continue. The Fennoscandian population has undergone a severe historical decline, and has not yet recovered. This genetically distinct population is now estimated at about 20 breeding pairs or 60–80 total individuals at most. They breed in northern Norway and overwinter in Greece, Bulgaria and Turkey. There is a major stop-over site at Hortobágy National Park, Hungary, where the birds spend up to two months during autumn and one month during the spring migration. Another part of the Fennoscandian population breeds in northern Sweden. The population size in 2015 is estimated to about 15 breeding pairs or 40-50 individuals in all. These birds follow a western migration route and spend the winter in Netherlands and Germany. According to the IUCN Red List in 2015, the conservation status of this population is Critically Endangered. A work plan was adopted under the AEWA LWfG International Working Group for 2016-2019 which includes activities to reduce hunting pressure in key wintering and staging areas; locate, monitor and protect key areas; continue satellite tracking and other research; prevent habitat loss and manage habitats in staging and wintering areas; promote the implementation of national legislation; and promote public awareness among key stakeholders and communities. Possibly develop captive breeding programs, and promote international legal protection for the species. Its cousin, the Greater White-front Goose (in the background in this image), is not endangered, is closely related, larger, and is found in my "Songbird ReMix Waterfowl IV: Geese, Loons, Grebes & Coots".
