Description
The tarantella is a typical southern Italian dance, apparently with origins dating back to the 1600s in the Taranto area and thought to be related to the bite of the tarantula (named after Taranto): apparently people believed the frenzied dance could help expel the spider's venom. There are several styles of tarantella, the most famous being that of Naples. It's danced in groups and pairs, sometimes with tambourines equipped with rattles that the dancers shake as they dance.
