Description
SCENE: Interior night. 1) Victor is asleep in his recliner 2) as Lauren pulls up in her car. Her headlights make him stir 3) and he checks his watch and grabs his drink as the headlights spill a cascade of venetian blind shadows across his body.
This little sequence took much more time than it should have. Part of it was settling into the style I want to use for this comic and the rest was trying to get the bits and pieces I needed. Almost unbelievably, I couldn't find two props I needed: a window and the floor lamp. I had the venetian blinds and the curtains, but the frame and sill were so elusive that I finally just made them out of primitives and just grouped them together (there are actually two identical windows in the scene, but when I framed the scene only one was needed). The second item was that darn floor lamp. My original design called for no lights or maybe light from a television. But that didn't work at all: I needed something to frame him (otherwise he was just a black blob in the first panel). I needed the lamp to be over his head, so again, I made something out of cylinders, toruses and other primitive shapes. I put a small spot in the lamp shade so that the light from above would be accurate to the scene (the "room" is made from a few planes placed which make up the two walls).
After I got the set dressed correctly (decided that the newspaper, side table added some depth to the scene), lighting and camera angles took more time than I expected. In some ways, it was easy to set up each panel because the changes between them are subtle. But, nevertheless, deciding on the camera movement and rotation took multiple attempts to nail it down.
Within the scene, the lamp rays and the headlights glare are special effects added in CSP.
----------
My standard workflow applies: Figure is Michael 4 with the Wolfgang character added. For each panel, I create two renders: one for the base black and another for the added shadows. I turned the shadows blue for this upload, but in the printed comic the story will be in black & white. Renders are composited in Clip Studio Paint.
