Interesting indeed! There is much to be discussed about shader node arrangements and how they are supposed to work when connected to the PhysicalSurface root node. I have found a major flaw in the Gloss/Specular converter compound node and have a potential solution, which I would be glad to discuss through site mail. I have determined that connecting the Separate RGB node to the ScatterRadius channels makes no difference from directly connecting an image map. The renders look identical.

I don't know anything about the Physical Surface root node. I only know a little bit about the PoserSurface root node.
