Now I am quite old but I do remember back in the 50s people used to go on the ice on the local lake. well two people took their cars on to the ice for a drive... Guess where those two cars are today

Oh ouch. That's risky to drive out on the ice. I mean yes in theory if ice is thick enough you can drive across but most places especially where I am that would never be thick enough. Walking is precarious enough (though some have done it).
There are still some outdoor skating though on some rivers/lakes I think if I remember correctly but they have to be careful to make sure it is thick enough.

The fire department would flood the park with a layer of water to keep us off the river.

Seen an great image on a different site it's a notice what you should do if you see that huge wall of water coming at you the funny thing about it is the wall of water moves far faster than most cars It was a joke,, but that wave stops for no one and gives no quarter

Yeah water can be quite deadly! Can rip houses from landscapes, etc. Very powerful force of nature!
