They are actually quite big (see the person walking towards them on the right).
And how skittish? Well let's just say the man was able to sit on that log by the swan there with their kid and the swan didn't mind.

Yeah I personally wouldn't get close either both out of respect for the animal and as you say, they can protect themselves quite well.
