Description

Another hornbill from my upcoming 3D model set... this time the Rhinoceros hornbill in an Ultrascenery created enviornment. There's some lesser Citron Cockatoos and NW critters in the background (which are barely noticeable). The Rhinoceros hornbill is from southern Thailand, Peninsular Malaysia, Sumatra, Java and Borneo. It's obvious why its named so. The coloration on the rhino horn is colored by preen oil. The male (in front) differs from the female by being 10% larger, having a larger and more defined casque (rhino horn) and not having a red rim around the whitish iris. They eat mainly fruit (in particular, figs). They usually forages in pairs and sometimes in small flocks when not breeding. This hornbill is listed as "Vulnerable" to extinction because of habitat destruction and deforestation. To a lesser extent, it is also hunted for its "horn" and captured for the pet trade.
