Can see where the water eroded the dirt.

Yep! In combination with people constantly walking up and down that spot it has become rather worn. They actually had to put in gravel to fill it back in because it was becoming dangerous (not at this time when I took this shot, at a later date. At this point it was still just dirt :) ).
