The tales are numerous and the accounts conflicting, but the oldest tales tell of the Bean Sídhe, woman of the barrow hills, who wails her lament for the dead, the caoineadh (from whence the English word “keening” is derived). This is a poignant and very well-executed image, Joe. It reminds us how our world tends to doom us to despair in these times of warlike violence.
