Description
The Flying Cloud was an American Clipper ship that made the run from New York City to San Francisco via Cape Horn during the California Gold Rush days. She set a record on her maiden voyage in 1851 and bested it in 1854. That record stood for 185 years. In this album I will attempt to illustrate the highlights of the trip. We start at pier 20 in New York with the loading of the last of the cargo.
Sing and heave, and heave and sing,
To me hoodah! To my hoodah!
Heave and make the handspikes spring,
To me hoodah, hoodah, day!
And it’s blow, my boys, blow,
For Californi-o!
For There’s plenty of gold,
So I’ve been told,
On the banks of the Sacramento!
--- from “The Banks of the Sacramento”
I am using the book “Flying Cloud – The True Story of America’s Most Famous Clipper Ship and the Woman Who Guided Her” by David W. Shaw as the sole reference for this voyage. I ‘built’ the model of the Flying Cloud that appears in these images from the plans drawn by Scott Bradner and using Blender as the modeling software. You can find the plans online at https://www.sobco.com/ship_model/fc/Flying_Cloud_plans_bradner.html
