Description
I wasn't intending on doing another render this week, as I have a lot of other stuff to catch up on, but i was reading Philip Pullman this morning and was struck by this phrase that one of his characters quotes, that instantly created an image in my mind's eye. I eventually traced the source to the poem "El Desdichado" by the early 19th century Romantic, Gérard de Nerval. Its quite well known I'm told (and I'm sure my Francophone friends here will attest), but my knowledge of French poetry is minimal, alas, so pardon my ignorance!

I like poetry, because in my eyes it is the word made image, it is a kind of incarnation. I return from time to time to this form of reading, because the story it carries is often more dreamlike, less rational. I willingly immerse myself in the writings of Baudelaire, Rimbaud, Verlaine, Paul Eluard, Jacques Prévert. And I must admit that Gérard de Nerval is not as familiar to me. Thank you for introducing me to the unfortunate man (El Desdichado), your image and his first verses have stimulated me to construct my own version that I will deliver soon.
