Description

Often I get asked “Why did you start working on stories about children?” The answer to that question is very simple, to create stories that go far beyond the adult world and delve into a different kind of beautiful. That entire new direction came from a simple idea "What if within the story filled with violence and the horrors of humanity lay a story that is both rooted in and followed the evolving relationship between a parent that comes to adopt another child as their own? A true beauty and the beast kind of story?" From that very moment my entire take on telling stories and creating 3D work changed with Scorpio and Ebrima being the birthplace of a very new direction not just of their own story but of everything else that follows. I have no idea how many times I have made and remade this scene with Ebrima lifting Scorpio up and into a waterfall, maybe 20? possibly more? each time I found little things that weren't quite right, Ebrima's pose or Scorpio's expression not being quite the mix of delighted disbelief. The water has never been quite right, I tried pre-made stuff but then decided to make my own, both animated and static versions to get that water just how I want and need it to look. I thought I had Scorpio's pose just right until I noticed something strange with children when they are picked up above waist height, for whatever reason once children are lifted above roughly waist height they bend their knees upwards? Like they are jumping or expecting to be carried? I assume it's some kind of instinctive thing maybe? Once I saw it happening, I knew that I had to build that into this scene too but with a little twist from Ebrima, as Scorpio lifts her knees he traps them between his elbows effectively suspending her in place to endure her first experience of a waterfall. So after 2 years and 20+ attempts to make this chapter header am I finally happy? Not quite, there is still much more to do but this is at least the perfect base to start from.
