Today we had the sad news of the passing of one of the great figures of world music, the inimitable Zakir Hussain. A great pioneer of Indian music, and probably the greatest tabla player of all time. A classical maestro, he was, along with Ravi Shankar, also at the forefront of east-west fusion with everyone from George Harrison to Earth, Wind and Fire. Shakti (=divine energy), the band he formed with John McLaughlin in the 1970s (and won a grammy with just last year), blazed a trail across modern jazz and beyond... seldom was there amore fitting name. #india #music #tabla #zakirhussain #maestro #shakti
