I've heard of red squirrels and grey squirrels. Is there such a thing as a black squirrel? Is it a species or merely a color variant?

There's lots of black squirrels in my area :) Not sure their full origin. They say online something about them being some sort of subgroup that have a darker pigment than the other squirrels; I think they said something about them basically being grey squirrels but with the darker pigment.
