texturing is great. I don't know what's the problem with metal, maybe the scratches ? use the texture axis to size the scratches as you want. Great picture and welcome to the gallery zzerpent !

welcome indeed, and please, more info on what's wrong,in your opinion, with your metal att.,looks fine t me as well.very nice modelling tho i'd have paid more attention to where i placed the screws on the wood, the one overlapping the groove looks out of place

The metal catches a cool blueness which is pretty tricky. The only stuff I've seen where people get a full on metal texture is when they use techniques like HDR (High Dynamic Range) - lots of messing around! Try here for some info. http://athens.ict.usc.edu/HDRshop/ Also there was a discussion about that on the Imagine list - do you subscribe to that? BTW your pic has a really nice use of depth of field. Show us some more.

Thanks for allt the great comments...and the problem with the metal is that it dont distort the specularity like it does on brushed metal..i think. the screw in the background was a last minute thing i threw in for some DOF effekt. And thanks for the tip Burnart!

Excellent work indeed! I'm not sure if there exists a texture handling anisotropic specularity, but that might do the trick... Maybe you could try to simulate/fake this, but it might need a very good antialiasing :/ You could also try to use Ingvar Lybing's concentric-texture (http://home1.swipnet.se/~w-14897/textures/textures.htm) for some effect.
