And now for something completely different ;)
I apologize for the almost insulting simplicity of this pic. But I found this guy so imposing that I just had to post this.
I am reading another book about the Teutonic Knights at the moment. Its a fascinating story. They started as a German subdivision of the Knights of St. John in the holy land and numbered less than a dozen brothers for many years. They finally became the only knights order which should manage to establish a real state of their own - which finally became one of Europe's great powers: Prussia.
No postwork.
Thanks for stopping by!

If you can get or rent a copy of the movie "Alexander Nevsky" by Eisenstein (available on DVD from amazon.com), you will see aditional Teutonic Knights -- all with fantastic helmets.

Maybe they have started Prussia, but before that They have nearly lost their war with the United Kingdom of Poland and Lituania and way after that Prussia had to pay homage to Poland... Nevertheless, the image is nice (if it can be said about a knight from an order that was plundering the lands nearby the place I live in 15th century...)

Well, they were invited by the Polish Duke Konrad of Masovia to make a crusade against a heathen baltic tribe which he could not conquer: the Prussians. He wanted to utilize the knights to gain control of their land. The knights, however, wanted to conquer the Prussian lands for themselves. Thats what they did from the 1220s onwards. They consolidated their military success by calling German settlers into the land. 500 years later the old Prussian language finally had died out. Inbetween, in 1410, the Poles and Lithuanians had indeed dealt a crushing blow to the knights in the battle of Grunwald (as the Slaws call the battle) or Tannenberg (as the Germans call it). In fact the battle took place between Grunwald and Tannenberg. After that the knights managed to keep most of their realm but had to recognize the superior sovereignty of the Polish King for quite some time. The Teutonic knights have a pretty bad press even today in the slavonic countries. I think this is mostly due to the fact that 20th century Soviet and Polish propaganda has labelled them as early precursors of Hitler's armies, just as 19th and early 20th century German propaganda had presented them as an early example of Germany as a supposed bringer of western civilisation in eastern europe. It appears to me that the knights themselves would be very puzzled by any of these interpretations. They viewed themselves as a community of christian knights who were doing what crusaders were always doing: fight those who are of the "wrong" faith and force them to become christian or perish. I hope Europe has learned some lessons from the experience of being at the receiving end of a "crusade". Espeially today, when western politicians are talking again of crusades.

Gad, it's too ironic that I am listening to a CD of Wagner's Overtures as I am perusing the last few days of Renderosity, LOL! Tannhauser is playing now... This is so apt!!!! Great work....

Can you make a half naked female teutonic knight? Just kinding. I love your background. The character would look more imposing though, if there were less empty space, in my opinion. Why not framing vertically?

looked up the info on Teutonic Knights. Interesting people. their bad reputation was well deserved!
