Daniel crouched at the bottom of the stairwell, holding his younger sister tightly. Around them the neighbourhood burnt. The ships had come without warning. Strange ships, all curves like modern sports cars, with a shimmering silver skin. They had come out of the night sky and they had brought destruction with them. Daniel bowed his head and prayed. He prayed that the destruction was over. He prayed that it was only a dream. A high-pitched whine screamed through the night air, followed by another explosion. Daniel curled further into the corner.
