I'm still working hard at figuring out how to make outdoor scenes in Max. This one was basically about terrains. In the past I have tried using displacement maps on quad patchs. I have tried the free plugins from Corevision and Effectware. I have tried exporting both the mesh and diffuse map from Bryce... so far I have not quite been satisfied with the end results. This time around I exported the mesh from Terragen. The sky is a simple gradient with volumetric clouds. The camel and man are zygote models. There is some minor postwork in photoshop.
Your suggestions are most welcomed!

I have found that straight elevation maps from bryce do not work because there is too much black. What happens is that when you displace with Max the black goes in the opposite direction instead of being unaffected. The trick is to bring the map into Photoshop and make the areas that will not rise 50% gray. I'm not sure if that is correct, but it works for me. If you need to dig a hole in your level ground, that is when you use darker colors than 50% gray BTW, this is a nice picture. I can feel the heat. Maybe you could add a little heat distortion somewhere on the image. That would look cool.

heh, I have the same problems you have, although you manage to get pretty effective here. I did get good landscaping meshes from Cybertion 3D Designer and Blender (with some pixel pulling) but those look worthless when imported to Max... Anyway you might try Vulcania (it's not a plugin it's a MaxScript) which I find better the Effectware's plugins I tried... Good work!
