Description

This is our Strand. It was named during the 1800's because it resembled the Strand in London, England. These are a few of the buildings which survived the 1900 storm. During the Storm, September 8th, 1900, winds reached 120 mph and the water came above the first floor destroying most of the homes on the island and killing over six thousand people. These buildings were built of brick and iron to prevent their loss in fires which had plagued the island during the 1800's. Oddly this construction is what saved them during the Storm.

Interesting write up. I was born and raised in Houston, but lived in Michigan since '66. Enjoyed the local color of the image.
