Description
This is my start for playing with the transparency mapping settings in Carrara 2.1.
I used an old model but broke a few of its parts up to add the texturing and transparency mapping. I then created a 2nd and 3rd copy of the model and scaled each down to fit inside one another other to add some depth to the damage.
Smaller object were added and put inside the model like the engines.

well, it worked! It looks very cool. Thanks for sharing the tip.

This is a very interesting test image. I can see lots of potential in doing this. It looks like some of the trans maps have either a highlight or shiny value as I can see light reflecting on it, specifically on the wing closest to the viewer. Excellent work.

VERY cool!

Interesting idea for a test. I'm curious to know how long it took to render it.

Niiiiice. Very well put-together, looks particularly incredible once ya realize simple that model must really be... I'm curious as to where you got those texes.

Thanks for the comments everyone. :) The render time for this test is (per-frame, 6 min. 45 sec.) This is with GI on and its settings set to low. The actual outside hull image map was gray and changed to a dull brown in post. It came from the Carrara CD for this test. I created the damage texture and alpha maps in Photoshop 7 and played with the settings a few days to get to this look. Reflection and glare are turned off but I do see a difference in the way CS2 and the first CS handle the use of transparencies. Full black still comes out, as a visible color by default in some places. Evan with all reflections, highlight and shininess turned off.

You've probably tried that "No Light Interactions When Fully Transparent" check box by the bump amplitude slider in the shader room?

ED Thank you! I did not have that setting enabled on any of the alpha maps. This is a new rendering with it enabled. I was able to bring my lighting back up again. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you!
