Thx... The background is a hubble photo (my bad, forgot to mention that). The trick (for this render) was to try and get the starlight to match up with:

Nebula color
the nebulosity (so it would look like some of the light source was unimpeded and some was filtered).
Turned out even better than I hoped for. Thx again for looking and commenting!
