Description

::: Part 24 of a series of Warbird Panorama Photos ::: Taken at the Planes of Fame Museum in Chino, California (at the Chino Airport) on 3-28-03. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- --- Be sure to visit the world famous "Planes of Fame Airshow 2003" on May 17th and 18th! --- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Aircraft: - A Douglas SBD-5 Dauntless (torpedo Bomber). This aircraft is the same type used in the famous Battle of Midway in which 4 Japanese Aircraft Carriers were sunk. The particular SBD was actually used in the movie 'Midway' with Charlton Heston (just the fuselage was used against a screen for in-air the cockpit close-up shots). Behind the SBD is a Grumman TBM-3 Avenger (wings folded). To the far middle left, you can just see the front of a dark blue Grumman F4F/FM-2 Wildcat. These aircraft are located in the 'Enterprise Hanger' part of the Planes of Fame Museum. The hanger was designed and built (finished just last October!) to resemble the flight ops area of the WW2 USS Enterprise (CV-6) Aircraft Carrier. The SBD and F4F are flyable, but the TBM's status is unknown. Camera is a digital Toshiba PDRM-5 (2.15 MP). Image was resized from 2654x1191. Please note that there are some mistakes in the stitching due to the fact that the camera's lens is not dead center to the rotation point on the tripod.

Great job, love these old planes. I go down to the hanger in Galveston were the Confederate Air Force keeps their museum every chance I get and I once actually got to fly in the B-17 for a short flight. Didn't George Sr. fly one of these in WWII?

George Bush Sr flew a TBM (behind the SBD in the background) if memory serves. Must have been great to fly in a B-17, someday I plan to purchase a right when the Collings Foundation's B-17 (Nine-O-Nine) comes back into town.

Cool shots! Makes me want to head up to Wright-Pat and check out their collection again. Saw the Nine-O-Nine in flight once. Impressive machine.
