Somewhat derivative of ET, in my opinion, but an excellent example of character animation. Well done.

Is the graininess of the image and animation meant to represent light amplification or film grain?

The grain is a film grain cheat. I do it via a pre-multiplied adjustment layer. Without getting too deep, if you study film grain there are two types, applied, and multiplied. Applied grain you see in snaphot film where blobs of RGB appear all over the picture. In slide films (reversal) the grain is bled into the colours, so a red area contains blobs of red grain of slightly varying tones, etc, etc. Also, you'll notice that areas of underexposure give more grain than areas of high exposure.
