ok, well my shader is perfect now, from front and side views...
the shader is entirely procedural... it will give an exact approximation of how a stone would look in real life with a particular model of a cut. (it will show errors in a cut as well) It takes light and reflects as accurately as possible given the 3d medium.
the inset is the same stone rendered from the front.
this seriously was not possible without the caustics and indirect global illumination renderer of Carrara, plus the fabulous PowerPackEx from Lost Horizons software, namely the Fresnel shader. Model is from 3d Lapidary.
