Description
This image was made entirely in Carrara Studio 2.1 in response to a review in 3DWorld Magazine issue 38.
All the models were made in the Vertex Modeller although it would probably have been easier to do the cup and saucer in the Spline Modeller. I wanted to show that Carrara does have a standard Lathe tool. The cup and saucer are lathed profiles. The cup handle and orange use subdivision surfaces. The spoon was built from scratch polygon by polygon but I probably should have lofted it or used Amapi. The objects were positioned using collision detection to get the surfaces to mate properly. Images were used as texture maps for the environment, the table and the napkin but the rest of the textures were procedural. The fresnel effects on the cup and saucer use the Lost Horizon Software Power Pack EX Fresnel plug-in to get the fresnel reflection, transparency and refraction effects on the glass cup and saucer. The render utilized a single spot light with soft shadows and global illumination with environmental lighting.

That's a very impressive work !

Very impressive my only real critique is the orange doesn't look very real, could be a plastic orange though;)

Spoons cups everything (even the orange) are ALWAYS far better, not to mention quicker and easier, done by subdivision, please do not take this as a criticism as the image is excellent and far better than the crap image from the magazine. Its just that I've built kitchen utensils so many times for clients Ive learnt this fact the hard way. ;-)

Thank you all for your kind comments. Nicholas86: I did make a better orange shader using PhotoPaint but for this exercise I decided I would use the built in procedural shaders. I was only trying to best the test image and so I didn't take it any further. gerry_g: I tried subdivision surfaces but I found that although they were quick and easy to make and render, they weren't as smooth as I wanted, especially for the cup reflections. I was also having trouble getting my head around the spoon shape the first time. The spoon actually was a grid, shaped and thickness added before being subdivided. I guess I am spoiled by Amapi's subdivision though as the result was still not as good as I wanted.

The stem on the orange is not my taste but the rest is "stunning"!!
