Very nice image. I know the book by Sohl of the same name. The needle is similar to a "stargate"-type device that allows living matter to transport to who knows where. But religious fundamentalists get worried and sabotage the needle. It then misfires and sends a whole city block off to somewhere that clearly isn't Main Street. Then, the stranded folks have to figure out how to build a crude replica of the needle in order to get back. This is just background in case anyone wants to know. I remember the book also! chuckle hooray for the Grand Old Days of Classic SF! This would have worked well as cover art for the period!
