The pose suggests an obsession for flying and the individual clearly wants to be a bird. Even though there is no sense of motion, the fact that s/he's looking downward could mean that in his/her mind s/he's flying already. And when you're flying you're mostly looking downward ;)

Very reminiscent of French and Italian masques. I'm reminded as well of the kind of atmosphere that was seen in the American version of "Dangerous Liaisons" - candlelight, slightly smokey air, hidden motives, questionable intent. Very powerful, as always.
