Description

Spotted this critter on the cement patio in my back yard. It's about the size of what most people (in northeastern Illinois) call pisser ants (a formic ant about 1-2 mm in size.) I did some online searching, and managed to identify this as a nymph of the Box Elder Bug (which are quite common in my backyard, so that would make sense.) I must have found out what it was through luck, as the nymph has little resemblence to the adult at this early stage. The "rocky terrain" is actually the sand grains in the cement, so the macro mode on this camera isn't too shabby. Getting this picture wasn't easy, as the AF on the camera is slow and the bug kept moving. I probably have at least 4 really blurry shots of this insect in addition to this one. Camera used: Toshiba PDR-M60 digital. Mode used: Macro, and I think the ISO eqiv was at 200 speed.

He looks lost in a granit world! Very little creatures are always a crime to photograph, specially when they are moving.
