Description

One of my best models yet, took me a whole day to model the damned thing because of its curvature. I'm still wondering whether I should try to make those little indentations through which the cloth is pulled on the handle, I'm probably going to attempt it when I'm gonna be confortable with using it in a scene. Until then, here it is, the katana of my dreams :)

C&C always appreciated.

Just like the real thing, only the most skilled will be able to make a perfect katana.

There's no way that's done with primitives.... but if it is you ARE defintely the most talented on the face of the earth... and otherwise an excellent render. An engraved sheath would really enchant thsi fine piece of art...

...a very nice render and a very nice sword...I have always held the belief that simple is good...if you can do this in one day...imagine what you could do in a week...! : ) NITPICK ALERT!!: (you might want to do a little research on katana swords...the blade should have some kind of discoloration where the blade was folded and merged with different materials and then sharpened...a "hama" I believe it's called...it looks almost like a wavy, frosted metal edge in comparison to the color on the rest of the blade)

Well done! Excellent modelling, and I like the texture on the scabbard and handle. Great image.

Aye, but methinks it's a great model... very functional, looks strong. The render of course is just perfect, nice soft shadows and the mats are dead-on. As for "folded" blades, they were grand in their day but now we have better materials, springsteel and carbon steels... No hamas there...

Looks very nice man, good clean shape. A hamon (temperline) would look nice, and can be achieved using a metallicity map... it is a result of heat-treating, not the folding of the steel, that causes it. As for modern materials being better, that could be debated....nice model man.

Very nice job. I have always preferred simplicity in design myself. I like this.

i like this model, special the light, its very realistic and efective. maybe a little more grain texture on the ground, but anyway its perfect.

First things first, the form is intresting, nice and clean. Where it begins to loose intrest for me is it has no hamon, or representation of diferntal heat treating on the blade. That is crutial for any katana that is suposed to be accurate. The curve of the blade is of little importance, as the heat treating process is what causes that curve, and it can be controled by a master smith. The reason for this tiraid is becouse there isnt a self respecting samuri in history who would go into battle with a weapon that looks pretty, but hasnt got the functionality to be useful. There works were always functional first, and beauty second. It is a start, but like the artist Malligar did, go back, and get inspired to create somthing that not only looks pretty, but looks functional.

Bah. methinks dsoger should try to read up on 'constructiveness'- i mean, damn. this blade looks about ten gajillion times better than the crap i make - wish i could model like that. But hey, i'm only a newbie - and as for the samurai bit, i'd me more than happy to take this into combat - it not only looks neat, but any weapon's better than no weapon, right ? who cares about the missing hamon. Geez. Really.
