here is a tip, I really recomend you use multiple lights, a very faint one that illuminates a tiny bit of the other side of the dog. I Also think pure black shadows are not realistic. In your light settings go to the shadow tab and change the black color to something like Lum=70 ,red/green/blue all to a value of 74, realistically you should be able to see the pattern of the rug even through the shadow. Just try my suggestion, either hate it or take it. :D
