It's "The Jungle Book" by Rudyard Kipling.This is where Mowgli escapes Shere Khan's attack on his family and finds the wolves den.The wolf was leaping on the approaching stranger when he realized it was a baby and so stopped himself in mid-spring, going straight up instead.Its depicted as close to the way it is written in the story as I could manage.
