I agree, this crop is a stronger composition than your first. In the first image, being a horizontal, your eye follows the line of trees at the fog level from the left to the right almost in a 45 degree angle across the image, whereas in this version the leading line is more subtle and the vertical crop tends to focus more on the trees and less on the ground. Nevertheless, both images have great impact!!
