I made this test in cinema 4d 8.1 I personally can't really tell a difference.

well, you need a light closer for 1, 2nd caustics really only work through a transparent material such as glass or water

How did you lit your scene? That matters a lot. Did you activate caustics in the proper places?

Caustics is the bending of reflected/refracted light. A metal ring will cast an inner diacaustic reflection just as much as a piece of glass will refract light into concentrated amounts as it passes through it. You may want to bring your light source down a bit and closer to your objects; then look in the C4D manual to make sure you have all of the neccessary settings. Keep trying, caustics are NOT easy.
