Description

This picture is a waterfall studie. I am not lucky about the result. I am more than disappointed :-( It is very hard to create real waterfalls. But it took me 25 hours render time and I worked 2 weeks on it. The name is Pteranodons Vue because I have created an other ptero picture with Terragen and PSP7. I hope you like it. Thanks for viewing and comments!

Sorry, I forgot something. The foam was rendered with Vue but I reworked it with PSP7 to make it more soft.

First let me say I like the composition overall, especially the rock formations (except those over which the waterfall cascades) and the foam on the lake/river below. But you're right, waterfalls are hard to do well, and sadly this doesn't quite pull it off. Full marks for persistence though - you've spent some time on this! From someone who has never done a successful waterfall so lacks any qualification to comment, here are the things where I think it fails. First the rock formation over which it flows looks very artificial compared to the others. It has an unnaturally straight edge and generally looks as though it was constructed specifically to make the waterfall as easy as possible, rather than blend in with the rest of the geology. Also it is not at all obvious where the river that spills over the edge is flowing from. The actual falling water itself looks quite good to me other than that the colour looks rather blue for what is in fact such a thin sheet of water over dark rocks. The splash/spray zone at the bottom again isn't bad but does not totally convince. I think more might have been done on the material for this in Vue using a mix of a transparent material with say milk or snow and a suitable distribution function or map. This would have reduced the need for such heavy post-working which looks a bit at odds stylistically with the rest of the image. Enough! From the length of these comments it might look as though I didn't think much of this picture. That is emphatically not the case. I think it's a valiant attempt with a tricky subject, and am just offering poiinters as to where I think that part might be improved.

Dotthy, maybe a tip: Try to order the latest issue of the Digit Magazine. You can get amazing results with ParticleIllusion which is included for free !!! http://www.digitmag.co.uk/latest/

I agree that something like this is very difficult and although I've never tried it in Vue, I've made these look very convincing in Bryce. Perhaps making a volumetric sphere for the mist at the bottom would help reduce the postwork and using a more transparent or white material for the water coming over the falls would help. I have trouble being critical when someone works so hard and even if it's not perfect (my work isn't either), I have to admire your determination and persistence. Regardless, you really did a great job here and you should be proud of the result!

So excellent composition and scene!! I'm just a beginner, but I had tried to make the water fall. It was so difficult, and the results were far from satisfactory. In Bryce the water fall seems to be made from terrain sometimes, I heard, and by the same way I had tried in Vue. The combination between the rockedformed terrain and waterformed terrain was good, but so difficult to form the terrain with water material. You really did a great job as usual. I love this image.

Dotthy...You should be proud of this!!! I am not gonna write a book here (like flycatcher..lol), The only thing I can see is the color of the waterfall it self. A bit too blue. It was 2 weeks very well spent. Excellent work!

I also would like to comment on this image which for persistence in it's creation rates an A. Everything in this image rates an A, the only negative would be the color of the water flowing over the falls and the straight area it flows over. One must remember that this is a painting and not a photograph, and I will defend your right as the creator to present it as you please. Congratulations, well done Dotthy!

High marks for your attempt Dotthy! You have tried to tackle a very tough subject! The comments from other viewers are proof that others have tried using alternative techniques as well!Sometimes with mixed results! You can take some comfort in the knowledge that it is at least possible to create this effect! Although sometimes it must be done using multiple tools and programs! You are a brilliant artist, and I have no doubt that you will eventually master a brilliant technique!I think this will inspire others to strive for those results as well!Keep at it!

Great job, Dotthy; I think the waterfall looks pretty good, myself; maybe a bit different color to the water, but it's so difficult to get it just right, isn't it?
