Description

There is no fun walking in a forest with temperatures close to 40 degrees celsius! So we had to change our policy and made a few little walks in the morning. Big dragonflies and nice butterflies flying around but it was still to darn hot. Dragonflies wouldn't sit down and butties didn't open there wings. To much energy and agitation! Wet with sweat, you draw the attention of gadflies. Normally they trouble horses, cows and the like but when it's hot and sweaty they also attack the human race. You can't ged rid of them. They fearless attack again and again so you have to kill them. On the photo the biggest of them all; the horsegad-fly. A 2cm big fearless parasite warrior. Look at his snout, your soft skin is no match for his superior equipment. He and his companions are found all over the world, so watch your back in the forest when it's hot and sweaty. There sting is painfull and can cause very itchy bumps the size of a golfball when you are allergic to it. PapaGuru.

Stunning macro! It has eyes like saucers and very dangerous looking tongs. Thanks for the explanation. Now I saw first time, with wich instrument this tormentors have bitten me, causing heavy allergic reactions. Hope you didn't get stung! In Germany one of their names is "Blind cuckoo".

Geeez, a mind-blowing macro! I wish I hadn't stared at it so long though, 'cos now I'm gonna really freak out every time I see it near me... I'm not allergic but I bruise like a peach and the itchy bite-marks last for ever. Fantastic shot!

Welcome back from the woods! Sorry to hear about the hot weather. You sure did well with this one, though! Excellent photo, as always! :)

Greet you all, nice to see your comments again. Well no moaning about the weather, I was not the only one. Had a nice private swimming pool nearby with big dragonflies znorring around my head. Still found enough treasures, ofwhich the gadfly is excluded. Gadflies sting me every year, no treasures without "danger"! PapaGuru

We have far too many of them here, it is impossible to go walking in the morning without being attacked by a half-dozen of them all at once. They are evil, EVIL I say!
