Description

WIP. I have been working on this piece off and on for a week. It started as a test to try to make waves and took on a life of it's own. The original ship was too low poly and looked like a cartoon, but I liked the splash at the front of the ship (made out of a palm tree). I found a new ship (Excellent ship from Garcia.alain.free.fr) and textured it to fit the scene better. While testing, I placed some black cubes to block out most of the water (render time for the water was a beast) and forgot to move the one on the left once. I liked the feel, so I put a clift there. I like the art Here, but I'm sure there are some details you guys (and gals) could help me with. Any and all suggestions are very welcome. I'm not a sea buff, so I'm sure I could use help. Vue 4 on a Mac; Major color postwork in Photoshop, the original render was way too saturated.

Not bad :-)) The waves look awesome.I only would add an element (light source on the ship for example) to "break" the darkness and give the eye something to "hold to".

wabe - yeah I tried that, but I don't know enough about this kind of ship to know where a light (or lights) would be. If anyone can tell me where they would be, I'll give it another go.

The gloomy atmosphere and the movement of the ship are excelent. I think a general backlight (not too strong) can add drama and definition. Did you render the image in ultra? It looks a bit jagged on the edges...

I like it a lot! :) I think you should add small light to lighten up the water here and there. Also, some faom would be good... Still, it's a great image!

... and that's why I don't go sailing! Great heaving sea. I agree maybe a light on the vessel would help the image, though like you don't know where it would go. I would guess (and no more than that) maybe a storm lantern hanging within arm's reach from either the cabin or the mast might be appropriate. There must be a mariner out there who can advise better?

Superb rolling sea, she's not going to weather those rocks! I would suggest the Captain order those sails "nightengaled" and put out a sea anchor! Excellent nautical image!

From what little I know of that era, I do believe that most sailing ships had a light or lights on the stearn (not much good here tho), they also would carry a lite on the masthead, but not sure which mast, tho, would guess the main. Maybe a soft glow, from the area of the deck indicating a cabin light that is unseen. By the way, fantastic image. I agree with Flycatcher, So very glad I'm not a sailor

Woohoo! Abandon ship! Looks like we be dashed against those pointy rocks and ripped to shreds! Great stuff! The total sense of volume - size of the waves - and the overall composition are terrific. I almost got seasick all over my keyboard. :o)
