Description

Forgive me but as of yet this is just a Rhino model, but I am planning on bringing this model to life in Bryce and wanted the opinion of this community on which way to go on the texturing. Should I do it old (rusty and unattended which was my first impression) or new, which would take some doing because a machine like this would be almost all black iron, I think? I have at least a weeks worth of my scarce free time to add a few more things such as a million more rivets and some more pipes and figured it was enough time to get some comments. I am half tempted to offer it up to free stuff as my first contribution and was curious if anybody would use it? This model as it stands is 18K/125,000polys in .obj format and seems to import into bryce on my very slow computer in about 1 or 2 mins pretty easy. Thank you in advance for you help. Mark

There should be conveyor belts correct? How is this thing moved; pushed, or pulled? The top (under the hand crack)needs a rim to indicate why there are rivits. Shadows do not indicate the same light source.

OK! shadows are not a concern at this point, but I get what you mean. The other two points you made a valid though and I will fix that asap. Thank you truck3114.

I think: Please post it in the freestuff area! I would use a rusty or metalic texture. Excellent model!

possibly might want to indicate some sort of steering, looks like a late 19th Century tractor, dangerous machines that killed many a good farmer in their day..but a big step forward from dancing around horse flops..;) maybe somewhere to store the coal, if it's going to be moving..;) but looks like a great freebie..keep at it.

I think that you must go rusty with this excellent model! It just calls for it.

Just a slight correction on pakled's comment. This was not modeld to be a tractor, but more a portable power plant for what and were it was needed. I belive this would have been pulled by somthing else and put into place, then belts were attached to the large upper wheels to give power to, lets say, a saw mill. But i am correcting the small axel to give it some sort of steering radius. That was indeed an oversight on my part. This a pic I saw looking for examples of this type of machine that shows you some example of what I mean. http://www.ohtm.org/collections/engines/images/eng_merlin.jpg

Hey, this is a fantastic model, either way - rusty -or metalic shine, this will be quite the model to use in an old style image.
Muhahahaha - heheh MUHAHAHAHAHAAA

Looks great to me, very similar to an old "steam donkey" I found rusting in the woods.

It's beautiful with no texture, you see only the form (that's why I like carving limestone, blandest of bland). Keep this one up your CD for reference! I have a great material, I think it's from the MetaCreations Bryce 2 Accessories CD.... "tarnished Copper", I keep it under my "Complex Effects" materials. It's procedural with color and bump only, so it's flexible, dark but not like iron - you could argue it's copper-clad over wrought iron, right?

I would certainly use it, if it were a freebie. Please consider it. As to textures, I recommend checking out some of Jonathan Allen's Seriously Real Textures for metals. He has several that would work well. One is a very dark gray that would do well for the new, and a rusted more silvery one that would also do fine. This model brings back memories. When I was a little boy in Michigan, during WWII, the farmers brought back into circulation the old steam engines and tractors, not to mention a lot of horse drawn vehicles like hayracks, mowers, etc. I can remember them all being used at harvest in particular. Some were a dark gray, almost black, others just looked pretty rusted, and some were fairly colorful with all kinds of fancy trim work--Reds, yellows, greens, etc. Not unlike many more modern tractors. Know this is posted very late in the game. Hope it helps!
