Description

My first attempt at creating Escher's "Belvedere". I say first, but it was a pain in the neck, so may be the last too. I've left it untextured since it's easier to see the impossibility of it. It only works from this precise angle (yes, I cheated). The columns aren't quite right, but with Bryce I can't bend space like Escher did. Totally Bryce, no post at all.
Does anyone know if anyone else has tried this (or similar) in Bryce? I'd love to see how they got on.

I have recognised the picture of Escher in the thumbnail... in my opinion, you can make impossible columns only with postwork (photoshop for exemple). Good work nevertheless

you cannot create Eschere-like illusionary 3d with modelers-renderers. only way is postwork as Euxeb007 mentioned. Over all, perfect modelling and render. Bravo !

The trick in many of Escher's work is that he is making 3d-like pictures on a 2d sheet of paper. Making it in reality or in 3d in a program is not possible. Escher abused the 2d paper sheet to make something that lookes 3d and impossible. You are trying someting not possible, but as noticed by Euxeb you could try it in a 2d program like photoshop.

Oh! He used Paper. I knew I was going wrong somewhere. Bryce, although a 3d raytrace program still produces a 2d image (until we get holographic displays), so it must be possible to come pretty close, although I'll agree it's not as easy as with a 2d program. My stubborn side might be put to good use with this one.

One of the keys to Escher's impossible 3D images is the isometric view. He took advantage of the 60 angles in that view to trick the eye. I think maybe you can pull it off in Bryce, but your POV is going to have to be just right. I think you're off to a good start, and I look forward to seeing more. I'm glad to see somebody trying it. Good luck!!

I thought "Escher!" from the thumbnail! It's a very good try (no, make that excellent), but I do think it's impossible to re-create Escher effect with a 3D renderer. But I'm looking forward to your next tries... :)

Just doing some research on who did what with Escher....I was surprised by those of you who think this is impossible........it's not!
