Description
Sibenik Cathedral is known for the frieze of 71 stone head (plus two lion heads). They are accurate portraits of the citizens of Sibenik from the era when the cathedral was built, that is, 15th/16th century.
Although they were so important at the time as to be portraited on a cathedral, nobody knows who really they were anymore. Sic transit gloria mundi.

Beautiful.....this my favorite of the three...you will probably find inside the walls on murals or mosaics on the walls also images of the rich patrons who financed the building of the church, (this was also a common way like the carvings on the frieze to honor those people).... Such a rich historical building..... looking forward to seeing more.

There's a great number of the heads on the outside of the cathedral, but these 71 are the most prominent. The rest are small and tiny. Of course, there are paintings and statues inside which were probably made with the patrons as models.

What a great series of "postcards". Thank you for showing us your part of the world! :) You know, I bet these prominences payed a lot of money to have their faces immortalized. They would not have liked it that we don't know their names now. :)
