I love the 3D quality and perspective of the gnarlies. Personally I would prefer the spheres to be more opaque, as it is a bit unrealistic to see the elements behind them unrefracted. One trick I have used is to apply a glass hemisphere on the background exactly matching the diameter of the sphere--this "refracts" the image behind and appears to give the sphere transmissive substance without affecting the sphere itself.
