There's a bit of a difference between HDRI and IBL, but I think I know what you mean. With IBL I find desaturating the image alot helps otherwise as you show, the colourcast is far too strong. I'd like to see this with mapped shadows too, all those lines look awkard, it might also be best to use a single skylight. Look forward to more examples, keep up the experimentation. :)
