Description
I gasped when I saw this. I'd been messing around with terrain settings, and without warning I inadvertantly discovered the long-sought Earth fractal...sort of. It's not perfect, but you can definately see a map of Asia, complete with India (off to the right) and a strikingly accurate portrayal of Spain. Panning around to the right shows the distinct shape of Indonesia and Australia (although the two are connected. At the top of Russia, you can see the band of earth that connects it to the Arctic Cirle. Africa and the Americas, however, are not so perfect. But actually I find this interesting, because the map loses consistency at EXACTLY the Mid-Atlantic ridge, and the other boundaries of the tectonic plates. As a matter of fact, even seemed to have generated some underwater mountains along those lines, the largest of which runs vertically through the Atlantic (which is also accurate to life).
I guess this proves one theory, but raises another. Are each of Earth's tectonic plates formed by a different fractal set? I'm going to experiment some more, but for now I've saved the file in multiple copies. I DON'T want to lose this.
