Description
This was modeled and rendered in LightWave, using the staircase in my house as a reference. The wood texture is procedural. I wanted it to be high contrast, and somewhat dark, so I hope it shows up ok on your monitors. I would love any suggestions and comments.

Thats great ! although there is an artifact (white square) on the stairs. Don't know if its the light source, or the stair texture. Maybe too much sharp if it's the light source. The image would be better without it . The wood texture is exceptional for a procedural. Very good job !

About the white square - I have spent too long looking at the image as I was doing it, and it is hard for me to spot these ambiguities. It is the bright sunlight coming in from a vertical window behind and to the left of camera. It is pretty much how it is in my house in late afternoon (plus a dab of contrast, because I liked it). Maybe you other viewers can help me out - is it very ambiguous? And what is the impact of the image overall? I wanted it very harsh, but is it too overwhelming?

The procedurals on the wood are excellent, likewise the modeling here! The high contrast is effective, but the light from the window does seem a bit too ambiguous and washes out a lot of your detail. Perhaps a tad less? Would love to see an alternative would a bit less starkness to it.

The shadow area under the lip of the steps leads me to believe that the window is a skylight, with the light coming from up high. I don't know Lightwave program so can't help you work this out. The wood textures are very realistic. The contrast looks fine on my monitor.

personally i would take the contrast down a wee bit, but if thats the look your going for then stick to your guns. nice image ;-)

Duly encouraged by freakmoomin, I am now sticking to my guns. It is SUPPOSED to be that contrasty! I feel the power surging through me now! Those white squares are MEANT to be that way! They ARE the light from the window behind, above, and to the left of camera, and they are totally washed out. :) That sun is harsh, and that is how it feels sometimes, especially when I am home alone, as the day drags on..

I'm just wondering about the floor - it's very reflective (maybe it's actually like that) It looks like polished copper or somthing. (by the way - how did you get the reflection to have that rippling effect? Its really cool. (And by the way - that harsh light? That's the way Dan Ablan's Tutorials show sunlight.) **Dan Ablan is the guy who wrote the big thick manual called "Inside Lightwave"

I think you achieved what it is you set out to do.Procedurals are excellent as well as the composition. My only comment is that if that is the handrail going up the stairs you have the picture out of scale. At this viewpoint the handrail is to low suggesting people who use these stairs are extremely small.Regardless, this is well done.

I like this geometric perspective and the angle on an ordinary everyday object.
