Description


This is the original version of the ship before it was moved into my "Fellowship of Star Faring Sentients" universe. "The Upholder of Honor" is a star battleship that exists in the same fictional environment as my earlier space battleship "The Defender of Dawn". "The Upholder of Honor" is perhaps a century after "The Defender of Dawn" and is much larger and more advanced. Like the earlier vessel, it is inspired by the "Star Destroyer" of the "Star Wars" universe. Length: 1450 meters Width: 484 meters Height: 150 meters The Upholder of Honor", its support ships, and various support craft were modeled, textured and rendered using TrueSpace 6.5. Most of the modeling was done using simple polygonal manipulation methods. The dry-dock was two open polygon extrusions with an alpha mask/transparency map applied to give the appearance of trusswork. The same method was employed to create the model of the ship under construction. I made a few custom hull textures in CorelDRAW and Corel PHOTO-PAINT. Some other textures of hangar bay interiors and underside recessed detail near the aft of the ship were created by fellow artist Sean Kennedy. The planets were all 3D objects with textures from Dark Tree Simbiont and Shader Lab, add-on texturing programs for TrueSpace. Various hull and detail textures came from Marlin Studios Amazing SF Textures, Dark Tree Simbiont, and images found on the Internet. Universe Image Creator was used for the backgrounds, running lights, and accenting the energy bolts. Some final tweaking of engine glows, energy bolt trails, and planet textures was done using CorelDRAW and Corel PHOTO-PAINT. CorelDRAW was also employed to create the translucent fading banners. With "The Upholder of Honor" project, I attempted a higher level of surface detail and more dramatic compositions than my earlier 3D CGI artwork. I wanted to show a large vessel surrounded by its support vessels and smallcraft. I decided to render the images at a larger size than my traditional 800 x 600 pixels in order to convey more detail. The project took at least least fifty hours to complete and was done over a three month period.

Nicely done, the windows and lights are way cool. The planets surface is to abstract tho.. i would suggest not working with fractals. I usually work with scans which i scramble and tile using various progs. Im not always pleased with the results but often the results are quite ok.

Thanks for the kind comments everyone! The planet was deliberately meant to be abstract rather than realistic to contrast with the ship. Still, I appreciate the hints for improvement and look forward to much such helpful feedback in the future. The glows were fun to do. I actually think my design is rather simplistic but the shape lent itself to many dramatic angles.
