Description
"My faither was a guid Lord's son, my mither was and Earl's daughter, And I will be Lady Keith again, that day oor King comes O'er the water. " Excerpt from "Lady Keith's Lament" written by or for (their is controversy about this issue), by Lady Mary Marischal (Drummond), mother of the 10th and last Earl Marischal.
I often sit and listen to music, and most times, Connie Dover is on the top of that cd pile.
As I was sitting here listening to this beautiful song of old, as I so often do, I was inspired to create this portrait. The poem was set to music and published in 1819 in James Hogg's collection, The Jacobite Relics of Scotland, being the Songs, Airs and Legends of the House of Stuart., under the name of "When the King Comes O'er the Water."
The history this poem has has always intriqued me, being the lover of history that I am. I always love to share. :D The Jacobites were partisians of Scotland's ruling family, the Stuarts, who by 1603, sat on both the Scottish and English thrones. James Stuart (James II) was disposed of by his Dutch son in law, William of Orange in 1688. Although many uprisings occured in 1715, under James Edward Stuart, and in 1745 under Bonnie Prince Charlie, (Prince Charles Edward Stuart), no Stuart would ever rule the throne of Scotland again.
Lady Marischal was born Lady Mary Drummond, Daughter of the Earl of Perth. Out of her loyalty and strong attachment for the Stuart Clan, this poem was born. She looks for the return of her King, and in her mind, the Salvation of Scotland as a bride waiting for her groom. Full lyrics and piano accompanyment can be seen and heard
here if you are so inclined.
