Thanks for the comments, and it was all done in bryce with metaballs and multi-replication. Unfortunately, this accounts for an extremely long render time.

Aye, the tentacles are not metaballs, but I think it's a great modeling job! Colors are vivid and wonderful, cool creature! Perhaps turn up the AA to Super, to get rid of the graininess?

Whay can't it be bryce? I designed almost perfect replica Star Trek ships with bryce, without importing anything.
