Magritte influenced picture, working on my doorway thing again. This is a redo of an earlier pic, but more in my current style. From Warkworth castle, Northumbria, home of Harry Hotspur and appearing in Shakespeare's Henry IV. Original Photo by Helen Nightingale, used with permission.

Arches speak of not only strength but also balance between forces. Of weight and gravity ... but also setting aside (suspending) gravity to allow a passage. Taken together, all of this gives a feeling of permanence.

Great insight! This dressed stone has a particularly satisfying scale - the construction is so clear and it's great survival only confirms it's perfect placement. I love the way asymmetrical courses can sum to meet precisely - a simultaneous equation.
