Description

Reconstruction of the Viking burial site at Gokstad, Norway, 9th. century a.c. An enormous trench was dug out of the clay where the king's longship was placed, together with 2 smaller boats, in the "logcabin" rested the king's body together with his favorite slavegirl on a ceremonial bed, his weapons and jewelry by his side. For the long journey into Walhalla he needed his horse, cattle was to be slaughtered and all his belongings were stacked on deck. When everything was ready, the trench was filled with sand, clay, stones and covered with thick layers of peat to end up as an enormous grave-hill. On the four corners of that hill, beautifully carved poles were placed as an ultimate honour to the great king/hero. Needless to say, this image took a LOT of Bryce/Poser work, the about 15 renderings needed were "assembled" in photoshop Thanks for viewing, comments as usual very welcome AND appreciated, Pierre

The boatwork, posing and people are excellent. But the ground seems so bare. Is the ground at the site really that way? In any case, I really like this image.

what a great effort, this is so great! and to my knowledge pretty much correct historically - contrary to a lot of other stuff I see online about the viking age. Here is a link to the Viking ship museum in Oslo where the Gokstad ship (and the larger - Oseberg ship) are: http://www.ukm.uio.no/vikingskipshuset/indexe.shtml Hmm.. Pierre... now what about the famous Norwegian Viking king of France... g Rollo? Now That's a fascinating man. ;)

I'm gobsmacked. What talent and dedication. Beautifully done. It reminds me of an illustration in a book - detailed, precise, fascinating.
