Description

When this old maple started growing, 100 years of more ago, the river probably ran in a different place.. Now, the tree is almost completey undercut, and yet it still stands, even leaning our over the water in a last act of defiance. Not only is it still alive, it supports mosses, mushrooms, and a colony of ferns, right at the top of the picture. When it does fall, as it must, the river will undercut it again, forming deep pools for the fish to rest and hide in, and the branches will form little rapids, oxygenating the water, Life goes on.
